UNION PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSION (UPSC)

  1. The Civil Services Examination : The Civil Services Examination (CSE) is conducted every year by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) as a common examination for various services like Indian Administrative Services (lAS), Indian Foreign Services (IFS), Indian Police Services (IPS), Group A and B Central Services.

  2. ELIGIBILITY CONDITIONS:
    a) Nationality:
    1. For IAS and IPS the candidate must be a citizen of India.
    2. For other Services a candidate, subject to certain conditions.
    b) Age:
    For General Candidate : 21-30 years ( as on 1st August)
    For OBC Candidate : 3 years relaxable
    For SC / ST Candidate : 5 years relaxable
    c) Qualification: A degree from any Indian University or an equivalent qualification (there is no restriction on the basis of marks, class or duration of the course).
    A candidate who is in the final year of his/her degree course can apply for and appear in the Prelim Examination. However, he/she should submit proof of his/ her qualification while applying in for the Main Examination, if selected.

    General Candidate : 4
    OBC Candidate : 7                              Subject to the age limit with relaxation
    SC/ST : Any Number

  4. How to Apply:
  5. The notification for the examination, is published in the month of February every year in Employment News/ Rozgar Samachar and Gazette of India / in some Newspapers, as well as on www.upsc.gov.in

    A) Candidates may apply Online by using the website www.upsconlinenic.in or Common application form devised by the Commission for its examination, which can be purchased from the designated Head Post Office / Post Offices against cash payment of Rs.30/- (Rupees thirty only).

    B) Admission fee for UPSC Prelim (CSAT) Examination- Rs.50/- for online application payable at SBI & Rs.100/- for offline application in the form of Central Recruitment Fees stamp. (Fees exempt for female/SC/ST/PH candidates)

  6. The Civil Services Examination Will Consists Of

  7. a. Civil Services Preliminary Examination (in may) (CSAT - Civil Services Aptitude test) Objective type test for the selection to the Main Examinations
    b. Civil Services Main Examination (Subjectwise written test in October and November)
    c. Interview (in March/April)

    Total: 400 Marks

     
    Note :
    1. The question paper will be set both in Hindi and English
    2. There will be Negative Marking i.e. one third (0.33) for each wrong answer.

  10. THE MAIN EXAMINATION:

  11. a) Candidates who have appeared in the Prelim Examination (CSAT) and are declared by the UPSC to have qualified for admission to the Main Examination, apply again for the Main Exam, in the detailed, a application form which will be sent to them by the UPSC

    The number of candidates admitted to the Main Examination is usually about 12 to 13 times the total approximate number of vacancies to the flied that year in the various services and posts.

    b) Subjects for the Main Examination (written) :-
    Compulsory Subjects:
    Paper I One of the Indian Language 300 marks
    Paper II English 300 marks
    The above papers l and II are of qualifying nature only. The marks obtained in them will not count for ranking purposes.
    Paper III Essay 200 marks
    Paper IV & V General Studies (Paper I & II) 300 marks each
    Optional Subjects (2 Subjects)
    Paper VI &VII Optional I (Paper I & II) 300 marks each
    Papers VIII & IX Optional II (Papers III & IX) 300 marks each
    Grand Total 2000 marks

  12. Interview:
    The number of candidates called for the interview is usually twice or thrice the number of likely vacancies. A total of 300 marks are allotted for the interview.

  13. Basic of Final Ranking:
    The total marks obtained in the Main Examination both written and interview will determine the candidates rank in the final selection.
